The Antlion is an aggressive creature found in abundance, and is the primary and most dangerous insect threat of the Sandbox. Despite being a dangerous threat, the larger antlions found in pits block access to smaller caves in the area, which are full of many valuable Resources.
Behavior[]
The Antlion has two different variants: a roaming variant and a variant half-burrowed in a pit.
Roaming Antlions[]
Roaming Antlions will mostly wander the sandbox surface, although some can be found inside the explorable tunnels of their pits. They may also occasionally be found on top of the Sandbox's wall. They're nearly silent when burrowing beneath the sand (like ladybird larvae), and they pop out suddenly when their prey is near.
Roaming Antlions will aggressively chase after prey and attack by biting. They have a normal bite attack, a charged bite attack, and a burrowing attack, in which they will go underground and pop up beneath the target.
Pit Antlions[]
Pit Antlions are stationary; they will try to make prey slip into their hole but never chase after them.
This variant has ranged attacks. If the target is near the rim of their pit, they will attack by throwing dead Black Worker Ant corpses at their targets (this attack can be blocked, but offers no collectable Black Ant Parts). If inside the pit but not directly next to them, they can throw sand that slows the target down and pulls them deeper into the pit.
When the target is directly next to the Antlion, they will attack via their normal bite, charged bite, or an area attack from shaking their head back and forth.
Harvesting a killed Pit Antlion will collapse the pit and reveal the entrance to the tunnels it was guarding. These five Pit Antlions will respawn over time.
Interactions With Player[]
Antlions are extremely aggressive to the player and will chase and attack them, much they would an ant or other creature. They will pop out of the ground to attack when detecting a player, in similar behavior to the Ladybird Larva.
Interactions With Creatures[]
Antlions are extremely aggressive to most creatures, but most commonly Black Worker Ants, and will chase and attack them the same way they will attack the player.
Advanced Loot Table[]
This is more advanced coverage of the loot-table of Antlions. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (ex., Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.
Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.
Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Strategy[]
Antlions can be a formidable threat—in groups, they're more dangerous than Wolf Spiders—so when fighting them you should proceed with caution. If fighting an Antlion, it is recommended to fight with tier 2 armor and a tier 3 weapon preferably. It is recommended to fight Antlions at night to avoid the Sizzle effect or to lure them near a shaded spot where you can quickly retreat and lower your 'Sizzle' bar. Another way to avoid sizzling is to use Fresh Defense or Mint Shards to keep it down.
When fighting a Roaming Antlion, the player should be wary of the creature's bites and block them at all costs. When a Roaming Antlion burrows underground, the player should sprint to avoid getting hit when it tries to reemerge beneath them. Alternatively, it is possible to Block/shield downward against the attack when the Antlion reemerges. If timed well, it can even be a Perfect Block.
When in a pit, it is recommended to get as close to the Antlion as possible, as their ant-corpse throw can one-shot the player and their sand attack can stun/slow the player greatly. When in this position, it is recommended to focus on blocking the bites, as they are just as brutal as those of their roaming counterparts.
Trivia[]
- The Antlion in-game appears to be the larval stage of the Antlions' lifecycle, with adult Antlions looking more similar to dragonflies.
- The Pit Antlion's in-game behavior of throwing objects is a very close representation of their real-life counterpart:
- Real Antlions flick sand to cause their prey to tumble further into the pit, similar to how they pull in targets in-game.
- Real Antlions toss out the dried husks of their victims for disposal purposes. This differs slightly in-game as they are instead used as a means to attack targets.
- The Black Worker Ant corpses Pit Antlions throw are not harvestable.
