The Black Widow is a challenging spider variant located within the Upper Yard, and is perhaps one of, if not the most, deadly non-boss spider the player can fight. Her high resistance to nearly all augments, other than sour, make it a fearsome ordeal to even endgame geared players.

Behavior[]

Black Widows live in seclusion; they spawn in cramped silk dens found in the Backyard, typically under structures like the Toolbox, and are never seen wandering outside of them. They also never sleep, always keeping watch over the Black Widowlings that spawn with her. Their attacks are similar to Wolf Spiders and Orb Weavers, although more powerful and faster, as well as getting faster as their health decreases.

They can also fire a web projectile identical to the Orb Weavers, except that it spawns a singular Black Widowling. Right after this attack, the Black Widow will attempt to eat any Black Widowlings nearby. If they happen to kill a Black Widowling, they will heal 30 health every second for 10 seconds and their attack speed is increased by 50% for 10 seconds. They can also inflict Venom, a variant of Poison that ignores Mithridatism and deals damage over time. She can also inflict a special form of Poison that stacks with every attack, applying more instances of itself every time the player gets struck.

Interactions With Player[]

Black Widows are categorized as Angry, and as such, are hostile to the player. They will attack on sight and will pursue the player until either they or the Widow dies, the player is no longer in range of aggression, or the Widow cannot reach the player.

Interactions With Other Creatures[]

Black Widows are passive to Widowlings, while not aggroed to any other source of aggression. While widows are aggressive, however, they will seek out and kill their babies in order to receive buffs for doing so. They normally don't come into contact with any other creatures naturally, but they are most likely neutral, as with all angry creatures.

Advanced Loot Table[]

This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Black Widow. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.

Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.

Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Strategy[]

Black Widows have a resistance to nearly every elemental augments. Since Black Widows are weak to sour, a weapon like an Acid Edge or a Toenail Scimitar upgraded down the sour path would be ideal. Occasionally, the Black Widow will summon a Black Widowling and eat it. It will then gain buffs such as faster attack speed and regeneration, it is key for the player to take out the widowling before the Black Widow has a chance to eat it.

Trivia[]

  • The Black Widow in the Undershed Sinkhole appears in a large, tightly spun silken den. In real life, Black Widows tend to build messy and irregular webs, being the spider's main hunting method of catching prey. The den in game appears more closely to Funnel Web Spider dens.
  • The Black Widow is addressed by Willow as the "Queen of the Arachnids". However, the Hedge Broodmother is referred to as the "Terrifying Queen of Spiders" in her Creature Card.
  • In real life, not all Black Widows are characterized by the red hourglass on the abdomen, instead by simply a red smear or spot. Furthermore, only female Black Widows have the hourglass. Males are smaller, have no hourglass, and have much less potent venom.
