The Larva is a hostile insect found in large swarms across the central sections of the Backyard. The Larva is similar in size to a Red Worker Ant and about the same size as the player although shorter. It is identified by its pincers, spiky sides, and wide-set eyes. They have an infected variant and an upper yard variant called the Ladybird Larva.

Behavior[]

Larvae are mostly active at night and roam aimlessly. They roam in groups sometimes numbering 10 or more. During the day, they're rarely active except in the instance when a group of Larvae leave their cave or the patrolling group doesn't return to the cave and is not killed from the night before. Inactive Larvae sometimes sleep on the ground during the day. Their numbers make them exceptionally dangerous to crafted structures. Larvae are rather slow and attack at close range. When attacking perceived threats, their eyes glow red and they bite. They also may latch onto threats and bite in a series of rapid, successive attacks, dealing high amounts of damage. The Larva has 3 attacks, a Regular bite which is easy to block, a Charged bite which is Deadlier than the normal bite, and a Combo bite which can be deadly if not prepared.

Larvae will also burrow in the ground passively, which to the player will look identical to Grubs, apart from making a much louder sound when burrowing and their loud chitters. Larvae will not attack the player in this state, but will become aggressive if the player digs them up with a Shovel, similarly to harvesting a Grub. Due to this, the player should take caution when harvesting Grubs, and should be ready for the possibility of fighting a Larva. It should also be noted that these burrowing Larvae appear to be much more aggressive than usual and will attack at a faster interval than ordinary Larva.

Interaction With Player[]

The Larva is hostile toward the player. It bites at close range and continues attacking using its normal attack behavior. A Larva with low health disengages from the player, turns, and flees.

Interaction With Other Creatures[]

Larva appear to have no interaction with other creatures unless provoked, in which they will attack. They will however attempt to burrow into the ground and pose as Grubs, making harvesting Grubs slightly more dangerous.

Advanced Loot Table[]

This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Larva. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.

Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.

Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Normal[]

Item Count Chance
Acid Gland 1 50%
Acid Gland x2 1 1%
Larva Spike 1 100%
Larva Spike x3 1 1%

Raid Variant[]

Item Count Chance
Acid Gland 1 10%
Acid Gland x3 1 1%
Larva Spike 1 100%

Strategy[]

A single Larva can be easily killed with any weapon, with their attacks being easy to block. A swarm of Larva can be deadly and possibly lethal and should not be engaged unless ready. Strangely, burrowed Larva have no break in-between attacks and can infinitely combo attacks, making them very hard to kill.

Trivia[]

  • The Larva was added because the developers wanted a creature in-between the threat level of a Red Worker Ant and an Orb Weaver.
    • The Larva was also added as the developers wanted a "goblin-like" enemy in the game.
  • The Larva is likely based on the larva of a green lacewing.
  • Larvae have a reputation in-game to be “disgusting”, as shown by the Larva Spike description and the picture of it shown in the Sign Frame.
