The Scarab is a rare creature found throughout the Shed Surroundings in fairly random areas and the Undershed. They are fast and almost impossible to keep up with. They are a prized kill for their Twinkling Shells, which are used for making jewels for Level 8 and 9 upgrades to Tools.

Behavior[]

Scarabs are similar in size and shape to a weevil. They are skittish, walking at a slow pace when unalerted, but immediately speeding off when spooked. They will continue to run until they escape. If they get stuck in a corner or have run too far, they will burrow and despawn. Their bodies also twinkle in a way similar to Buried Treasure.

It has a variant located exclusively in the pipes in the Undershed. These variants die in one hit from any source of damage, have a much larger loot-table than their normal variant, and can not burrow due to them being in the pipes. They, however, cannot be stolen from for extra loot.

Interactions With Player[]

The Scarab runs very quickly away from the player once it notices them. It will never stop under any circumstance, unless cornered or after running for a prolonged period of time, in which case they will burrow under the ground and disappear.

Interactions With Other Creatures[]

Scarabs will run away if they spot any nearby creatures. This can lead to them running away, or even burrowing, while players are hunting them.

Advanced Loot Table[]

This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Scarab. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.

Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.

Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Spawn Locations[]

Scarabs can have a variety of spawn locations, but can easily go off track or travel quickly away from it. The most reliable locations for Scarabs include:

Using the Resource Surveyor and scanning for their shells will always show their location during the scan and can be used to estimate their location.

Strategy[]

Scarabs run away extremely fast upon spotting the player, so the best option is to use ranged weapons. Players' main goal when hunting this creature is to one-shot it to avoid a chase, so a Spicy Staff is a great option due to its weakness to all elements and the staves long range. An upgraded Black Ox Crossbow with Splinter Arrows can be very useful to deal massive damage to the creature if the player does not have a Spicy Staff. If the crossbow is too weak, sources of poison like the Mask of the Mother Demon or Venom Arrows are a great option. Melee attacks are unlikely to succeed, but are possible if players sneak up behind Scarabs or drop on them from above. If a scarab spots you, you want to run in the opposite direction as fast as possible, because then there is a chance that the scarab will not burrow into the ground.

Trivia[]

  • The Scarab in-game is probably based on either the figeater beetle or green June beetle. These insects are both members of the scarab family and have an iridescent green shell.
