(From left to right) Pete, Max, Willow and Hoops
Upon starting a new game, the player can choose their character from 4 Teens. The intro sequence reveals that they are the most recent disappearances in a string of potential abductions and otherwise missing teenagers in their town, Brookhollow. In-game, all of them are equipped with a SCA.B on their left hand. Not much is immediately known about the teens, however their individual personalities and quirks can be inferred by their passive/reactive dialogue.
The player character awakes in a small cave, unsure of what happened before they blacked out. On leaving the cave, surrounded by oversized blades of grass and a massive baseball, the realization that they are now standing at a mere 7 millimeters tall quickly sinks in.
In order to figure out what happened to them, the player must survive the dangers of the backyard and find a way to return to their normal size.
Ally "Hoops" Nguyen[]
Description[]
Confident, determined, and energetic are some of the things Hoops's friends might say when describing her. A natural-born leader on and off the school basketball court, Hoops acts like she knows what she wants, which comes in handy even if she doesn't. That said, she is always ready to help a friend and the first to cheer them on when they need it.[1]
Appearance[]
Hoops has dark brown hair that she styles into a side ponytail held up with a yellow scrunchie. She wears a white t-shirt with a pink, skateboarding cat donning shades. On her back is a multi-color, plaid-patterned backpack. In addition to the adhesive bandage on her right knee, Hoops also wears pink and white dolphin shorts, white socks with blue stripes, and white basketball shoes with blue laces.

Maxwell "Max" Smalls[]

Never one to leave a friend hanging, he is always there when needed and usually has a smart remark ready for any situation he comes across.[1]

Max has brown hair in a flat top hairstyle. He wears a yellow tank top that says "WHOA" with a tiki-style illustration of three colorful dinosaurs dancing in front of an erupting volcano, along with a black and yellow backpack. Max also wears ripped, faded blue jeans, white socks, and black and red sneakers with red laces.
Personal Trivia[]
- He dreams of becoming famous.
- Max is allergic to bees.
- Despite poking fun at Pete, Max is a self-described nerd, specifically mentioning his collection of baseball cards and comic books.
- He seems to take his collecting hobby somewhat seriously, correcting Pete when he describes a Yoked Girth figure set as "toys" that they're actually "poseable, collectible action figures". He also mentions to Hoops that the reason her own baseball cards degraded might have been due to her not storing them in a "temperature and humidity controlled environment".
- Max presumably does not perform very well academically, mentioning that the Moldorc Castle Playset "looks like his mom's face after she saw his last report card".
- Max hates Mosquitoes.
Peter "Pete" Boggs[]
Description[]
Cautious and thirsting for adventure, Pete seems prepared for almost any situation... almost. Pete understands that his hobbies, such as his love for the role-playing game Minotaurs and Myrmidons, may seem nerdy to some, so he values those who let him be himself; those who befriend him will have a friend for life.[1]
Appearance[]
Pete has short, blonde hair and freckles. He wears brown aviator glasses and has an orange and blue backpack. He also wears a blue button-up with a planetary design and a front breast pocket with two pens inside. His shirt has rolled up sleeves and is neatly tucked into his brown, leather shorts. Willow Branch[]
Description[]
Underneath the witty and sometimes dramatic exterior lies someone with a caring and generous heart. Willow can come off as intimidating to those who don't know her, but those who do will tell you that she is one of the best friends anyone could wish for, sarcasm and all. Although she enjoys theatre, poetry, and the band Sad Stab, most wouldn't guess that she has an interest in fantasy and adventure.[1]
Appearance[]
Willow has black hair in a spiky style. She wears black eye shadow and lipstick. Her clothing consists of a yellow/green undershirt and a black tee with a design depicting a dagger with a rainbow blade stabbing a cloud, (From her favorite band, "The Sad Stab"). - Willow seems to have an interest in politics, critiquing consumer culture and describing her current situation as a "geopolitical nightmare".
Trivia[]
- While playing in multiplayer, depending on which teens are present, the characters will converse with each other in response to certain events.
- Through these interactions, it is conveyed that the teens knew each other before the events of the game. While they do know each others' names, it seems they weren't very closely associated in school, likely having separate friend groups.
- In the character select screen, Pete mentions that, while his name is Peter, his friends call him Pete. Throughout the game, Willow almost exclusively refers to him as Peter. Presumably, the two characters did not know each other very well before the events of Grounded, and Willow even addresses him as a "random classmate" at the very beginning of the game.
- Through these interactions, it is conveyed that the teens knew each other before the events of the game. While they do know each others' names, it seems they weren't very closely associated in school, likely having separate friend groups.
- All the teen's names are either puns or plays on words. Max's full name is Maxwell Smalls, and his nickname is obviously Max, making him Max Smalls, an oxymoron. Willow's full name is Willow Branch, clearly referencing the tree. Peter "Pete" Boggs is a little harder to figure out, but his name is a play on the natural phenomenon of a peat bog. Ally "Hoops" Nguyen is the only character who's pun comes from their first name and nickname, rather than their nickname and last name, with Ally "Hoops" being a play on the basketball slang term "alley-oop."
- Willow is the only character to not directly be given a nickname.
- There is also a 5th teen with an unknown name, all that is known about them is that they woke up before the rest of the teens. In game, you can find this teen’s camp. It consists of a usable Lean-To, and a trinket with a deuces sign that grants a speed boost upon damaging a spider, this implies that the fifth teen was attacked by a spider. However, based on the description of the trinket, it appears that this teen was able to escape the spider, although they cannot be physically found anywhere in game. The fate of the fifth teen is unknown.
